The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand has launched its 2026 Transport Policy, titled Connecting Aotearoa, which prioritizes shifting away from private car dependency toward fast, frequent, and affordable public transport.

The policy is costed at approximately $23.9 billion and aims to combat the fossil fuel crisis by making public transport a viable alternative to driving through significant infrastructure investment and fare reductions.

Key components of the policy include:

  • Fare Structure: Public transport will be free for children under 18, students, apprentices, Community Service Card holders, and Total Mobility users. All other adults will face a maximum fare cap of $2 per journey.
  • Mass Rapid Transit: The party plans to build mass rapid bus and light rail networks in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with the final mode (light rail vs. bus rapid transit) determined by the Infrastructure Commission.
  • Intercity Rail: The policy proposes restoring intercity passenger rail services, including an overnight sleeper train between Auckland and Wellington, the return of passenger rail between Christchurch and Dunedin, and an extension of the Te Huia route to Tauranga.
  • Regional and Rural Services: The plan includes funding for150 new regional bus services, improved inter-regional connections, and support for councils to expand public transport in smaller cities and towns.
  • Active Transport and EVs: The party pledges to fund safe walking and cycling routes, pedestrianize inner-city areas, and introduce a target date (likely 2030) for the import of only zero-emission light vehicles.

The policy emphasizes ecological wisdom and social responsibility, aiming to reduce emissions while ensuring equitable access to transport for all New Zealanders, including those with disabilities and low-income households.

The party argues that these investments will save citizens money, reduce congestion and create a more sustainable future.
